The effect depends on water sheeting evenly over a weir wall that must be level along its entire length. Any deviation and the sheet breaks into patches, which is immediately obvious and effectively impossible to correct once the structure is built.
Behind the edge sits real engineering: a catch basin sized for the flow, a balance tank with enough surge capacity for swimmers entering the pool, pumps rated to keep the edge running continuously, and structural design for a wall retaining water on one side and open on the other.

For a true vanishing edge, yes — you need somewhere for the catch basin to sit below the weir. On flat plots a deck-level overflow pool achieves a similar clean water plane.
Somewhat. The edge pump is additional to filtration and evaporation is higher. Most owners run the edge on a timer for evenings rather than continuously.
An overflow pool collects water in a channel on all sides at deck level. An infinity pool spills over one or more open edges into a catch basin below, so the water appears to end in mid-air.
Within a very small tolerance along its whole length. Construction is checked repeatedly with levelling instruments before finishes go on, because it cannot be corrected afterwards.
